BIO:
Now based in Brooklyn, Steven Laxton was born in rural Australia. After relocating to Adelaide, he began shooting for local magazines and clients while still a teenager. His talent was recognized early when American Photo Magazine named him one of the “15 Rising Stars of International Photography.”
Laxton’s rise continued when Communication Arts featured him as a “Fresh” artist—an honor that coincided with the inclusion of his Holocaust survivor series in Afterwards: Contemporary Photography Confronting the Past, a book and exhibition curated by Nathalie Herschdorfer of the Musée de l’Elysée.
He was later awarded the prestigious Arnold Newman Prize for his evocative photo essays and portraiture—one of the most significant honors in contemporary portrait photography. His project Circo El Salvador, documenting nomadic circus families in El Salvador, earned both the Picture of the Year International Feature award and a PDN award. In recognition of the series, he was named an International Friend of El Salvador, one of the country’s highest civilian distinctions.
Laxton’s work has been selected for inclusion in the American Photography collection (numbers 29, 31, 35, 37, 39, 40, and 41), and his film for the Rewrite Your Story campaign won several Art Directors Club Awards, including Best Direction and Best Casting. The film also received a Deadly Award and earned him a spot on PDN’s list of 20 Emerging Filmmakers to Watch.
His advertising and editorial work has been recognized in the Communication Arts annuals, and his distinct visual style—marked by heightened emotion and a visceral, energetic quality—offers a compelling commentary on how experiences feel, rather than simply what is seen.
Steven Laxton’s work has been exhibited internationally and is held in the permanent collections of the Portland Museum of Art and the Museum of the City of New York.
