COMMUTERS Public transport is the ultimate in democratization of a city’s people, everyone is in the same train carriage or bus, there is no division based on economic class or education. The city comes together for those minutes or hours on their commute. The transport system is the arterial lifeline of a city, allowing the flow of oxygen to all it's parts in and out of the heart of it’s business and cultural center. The Passengers riding in this shared system, colliding and flowing with fellow citizens, form the cities pulse and soul. This is what I set out to document in this project. For a week, I set up a portable studio in subway, train and bus stations around Perth and invited commuters to sit for me whilst waiting for their ride. These images were then presented in a form of a public gallery, an exhibit of the people, for the people. The portraits are displayed as 12ft high B&W prints in the subway and train stations around the Perth, as a way to celebrate the cities people and diversity.
